Death of a Ninja by Shockbolt Death of a Ninja by Shockbolt
This is an illustration done for this weeks friendly art challenge over at [link] , topic being "ending it all"
The story behind it is as follows:

A highly skilled ninja is demanded by his master to assassinate the child of a rivalling lord.

The ninja, old and weary, cannot make himself to do this. And he does not want to go against his Master. He has sent countless souls to their awaiting judgment in the afterlife, but an innocent child...

So he climbs the highest mountain, to get as close to his Gods as he can, before uttering his silent prayers. Hoping he was heard, the ninja drives his sword into his body and silently slips into the afterlife.

I wanted to portray this but still maintaining a peaceful, tranquil feeling over it, even though it shows a suicide.

Painted in several layers, no reference used, spent an evening on this one. Photoshop and a wacom intuos 3 tablet used.

As for using this image, refer to my rules in my journal here: [link]

I love the birds. And I also love how you can make a tragic scene one of peace and beauty as well. Its like he's coming from a dark place into one of light. It's beautiful.
And so is the storyline, as always!

you didn't use [blending effects]/[layer style] for the rocks, did you?

It'll show in the step-by-step guide how it's done. But shortly, it was painted in two layers, the second layer was a blending layer set with bevel and emboss: chisel soft, then black was painted into it using the airbrushtool set to Overlay. After that I used smudge to create the desired texture of the rocks.

I have but one objection. He should have put hes wakisashi in hes belly instead of in hes chest. This way to commit suicide seems a bit difficult. But a nice pic anyway.

That sword looks like the one a samurai uses. Or maybe not :ohnoes:
I never was good at differentiating ninjas from samurais  *sigh*
This is pretty cool, though. :+favlove:
