This was painted for my own pleasure and as a study into the use of light and volumetrics to create fantasy art.

As for it's story...I leave that up to Yourself to decide once again :-)

Painted in several layers, no reference used.

Photoshop and a intuos 3 wacom tablet used

Beautiful depiction of depth, and the ambiance is amazing. The detail and feel is amazing. The only odd thing is that the weight on the reverse end of the knight's spear looks a little long.

Thank You for the feedback! I would agree with You, if it weren't for the fact that the grip here is longer than the usual historical lancegrip is :-)

Hmm...I guess it might be, depends on which era and country the lance is based on. Maybe it's an extended weight for a reverse-end-mace? Either way, it still looks fine.

That's one strong piece! Love the composition here, so many lines which lead the eye around, be it from the dragon itself or be it the lance of the brave knight which leads the eye back into the image. The light seems very vivid, and I like the translucency of the wings, although I think that perhaps it should not occur everywhere on teh wing, but only where the skin is the thinnest. And there I could see it being a little more red, too, seeing as how the light would pick up some of the blood's colour which probably is in the thin skin layer. That would give the dragon a little more variation in colour, too
That said, it's really an impressive piece, and I love the almost photographic touch with the overexposed bits

Great work!
Daniel

This image is one of the older one's in my gallery and I'm most likely to take it down in the near future. :-)

Well I like it! And one thing that stands out to me is that the guy in armor is actually using a weapon that could conceivably kill the dragon--rather than a teensy little pig-sticker of a sword that would barely get through the skin.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm not sure I'd use a sword myself either, against a dragon of any kind .

Awesome! I just read Beowulf and this image will come to mind whenever I think about it. One little suggestion, to make the Dragon more fearsome, you should and flames, with the Knight fighting fior his life by defending against the fiery onslaught with with shield. Just a tiny suggestion, to make the piece more heroic.

I simply love the lighting and textures especially in this picturel; I think the dragon's scales are my favorite part, and the fluidity of hte way his tail is moving. Great stuff! :D

this is beautiful!! the light shining on his scales makes them glitter like the gold that litters the floor (assuming that IS gold??)

I love the way you played with the light too - and also, the light coming through the holes in the wing - I just love it!!!

For some reason, the dragon's expression seems slightly comical to me. But great work with the lighting anyway.

The altogether glowiness of the picture caught my eye a mile off. I simply love the sunlight coming down and the dragon's flowing, snakelike posture. Also the gold is very shiny! Can I have it?
Very good work my friend!
