It's a simple texture of grey boxes and rectangles in all sizes, then put on as a distorted layer, several times all over the ship. Not the usual 3D approach, but it achieves the desired effect in the end
My usual approach is to create a new image at for example 1000 x 1000 pixels and fill it with the squares and rectangles. When the 3D model is finished, I save a screenshot of it and import it into Photoshop. Then I apply the newly created texture as either a multiply or overlay layer and reduce the opacity to about 60-70%, depending on the texture itself.
I used to be good at 3DS MAX but that was years ago and I don't have the software anylonger.
